The liberal government’s Our Mountain Future (OMF) action plan contains a pathway to usher in a cable car as an “all-weather access” solution, even after finding that all-weather access is not possible.
The action plan’s treatment of “all-weather access” as an option is dangerous, and is not mitigated by the ridiculous claim on p52 – that the plan doesn’t really mean all-weather access when it says all-weather access. (p52, below)
Kunanyi/Mt Wellington is not safe during severe weather and this needs to be made clear, not obscured with misleading language that suits cable car proponents.
The plan should clearly state that all-weather access is not possible because the mountain is unsafe during severe weather conditions. There are already monuments to people who have died after being caught in freezing conditions. We don’t need any more.
