This was the most difficult decision I have ever been a part of. While I wanted to pass this desperately-needed proposal, the application clearly failed the planning scheme.
I met with the proponents a few weeks after the decision, and the proposal was ultimately modified in the TASCAT tribunal before being approved by the Council. The time between the initial rejection and the final approval was less than three months.
During my time on this Council we have dealt with numerous social housing applications. I’ve supported all of them except this one (initially), and only because it failed the scheme that Councillors are required by law to administer.
Construction of the Argyle Street shelter started in 2025 and is due for completion next year.
